Youngsters get top tips from Olympic diver

SEVEN budding young divers from Southampton and the surrounding area attended a series of master classes last Friday (June 1) with Olympic and Commonwealth diver Peter Waterfield.

Peter offered young diving hopefuls aged from six to 13-years-old the chance to get top diving tips during a series of half hour sessions at the Quays Swimming and Diving Complex in Southampton.

Twenty-six-year-old Peter said: “I really enjoyed the chance to pass on my enthusiasm for diving to children. We have a great programme here, catering for children for miles around and I like to feel that this is one of the ways I can give something back to a sport I really love.

“The master classes were a success and the children who attended had a great time. We will be organising regular master classes in the future to help youngsters learn a variety of new diving skills and techniques.”

Peter took a selection of his medals including his Commonwealth Gold medal from 2002, his Olympic Silver medal from 2004 and his Commonwealth Silver medal from 2006 for the children to see.

Each child was given a postcard of Peter and his diving partner, Leon Taylor to take away as a souvenir.

Peter, who competed in the FINA Grand Prix in the USA in May, attended a national training camp with international divers and coaches from all over the country last week (May 28 onwards) at the Quays Swimming and Diving Complex in Southampton.

The next step for Peter will be competing at the FINA Grand Prix in Rostock, Germany from June 22 until 24.
